Early Detection Saves Lives: New National Lung Cancer Screening Program

0 Social 1 1x1

From 1 July 2025, Benson Radiology will offer low-dose CT (LDCT) lung scans as part of the National Lung Cancer Screening Program (NLCSP). The program is a major step forward in the early detection and treatment of lung cancer in Australia.

As one of South Australia’s leading diagnostic imaging providers, Benson Radiology is well-prepared to support this life-saving initiative.

With 32 clinics across the state, and decades of experience in advanced medical imaging, it is now easier than ever for eligible Australians to access safe, effective lung cancer screening close to home.

What is the National Lung Cancer Screening Program?

Lung cancer is Australia’s deadliest cancer, claiming more lives than breast and prostate cancers combined.

Often, by the time symptoms appear, the disease has already progressed to an advanced stage – making treatment more difficult and outcomes less certain.

The NLCSP aims to shift this pattern. By offering low-dose CT scans to people at high risk, the program hopes to detect lung cancer earlier, when treatment options are more effective and survival rates are significantly higher.

Am I eligible for a LDCT scan?

You may be eligible to take part in the National Lung Cancer Screening Program if you:

  • Are aged between 50 – 70 years
  • Have no current symptoms of lung cancer
  • Are a current smoker, or have quit within the last 10 years
  • Have a smoking history of at least 30 pack-years*

(*Equivalent to one pack per day for 30 years, or two packs a day for 15 years).

If you’re not sure whether you qualify or not, talk to your GP. They’ll assess your eligibility and can provide a referral if appropriate.

No cost to eligible participants

You will need to see a healthcare provider like a GP, a specialist or other qualified healthcare provider to get a request for a low-dose CT scan.

There is no out-of-pocket expense for the scan for eligible participants.

Special considerations

You may not be suitable for the program if you:

  • Had a chest CT in the past 12 months or have one booked within the next three months
  • Recently had a lung infection (e.g. COVID-19 or pneumonia)
  • Cannot lie flat and raise your arms for 5 minutes.

Your GP can help assess any temporary or long-term exclusions.

Proudly supporting a national effort for better health

Led by the Australian Government, in partnership with the National Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation, this program is designed to be equity-focused, culturally safe, and person-centred.

What’s next?

If you think you might be eligible, the most important thing for you to do is speak with your GP.

A quick conversation and referral could lead to early detection and better outcomes.

A lung cancer screening could save your life, or the life of someone you love.
