Nuclear Medicine
Nuclear medicine uses low doses of radioactive tracers to investigate alterations in anatomy and physiological function.
Patients are given a small dose of the radioactive tracer via injection, ingestion or inhalation. The tracer – which is specific to the type of scan – concentrates within an organ or organ system. The distribution of the tracer is then imaged at intervals by a special Gamma Camera.
Nuclear medicine scans are safe, low dose and can vary in length.
