Breast imaging services
Benson Radiology is the only Practice in the nation to provide a complete breast imaging service.
We have a well-deserved reputation as a leader in all forms of breast imaging, which now includes:
- the only FDA-approved automated breast ultrasound (ABUS) unit in Australia, and
- the widest availability of tomosynthesis (3D mammography) in South Australia
Mammography and tomosynthesis
Mammography remains the best method we have for early cancer detection. Benson Radiology now also provides breast tomosynthesis, which is three-dimensional imaging technology that gathers low-dose images (slices) from a short x-ray sweep of the breast.

Contrast Enhanced Mammography (CEM)
In a groundbreaking advancement for women's health, Benson Radiology has brought Contrast Enhanced Mammography (CEM) to South Australia, a technology poised to significantly improve breast cancer detection.
Previously only accessible interstate, this marks a major milestone in the early diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer.
Why is it important?
- Mammography is still the most reliable form of imaging to detect breast cancer, but it is less sensitive among women with dense breast tissue, where (under mammography) the breast tissue can often mask small suspicious lesions.
- 1 in 7 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime, and outcomes are improved when cancer is detected in its early stages.
- CEM improves the accuracy of routine mammography, aiding the early detection of breast cancer.

Ultrasound and automated breast ultrasound (ABUS)
Benson Radiology is the first and only imaging provider in Australia to introduce the GE Invenia automated breast ultrasound (ABUS) – an ideal investigation for women with dense breasts.
ABUS acquires ultrasound images of the breast using a 15cm wide field of view transducer that is scanned over the whole breast in an automated fashion, to collect three dimensional (3D) ultrasound volume data.
When performed in conjunction with mammography, ABUS helps increase cancer detection in women with dense breast tissue.

Breast MRI
Breast MRI forms an important part of the integrated solution to breast health and can be a useful diagnostic tool
Benson Radiology has worked hard to build a market leading capability and service offering in this field.
All breast MRI examinations are performed by our highly trained MRI radiographers on the latest wide bore MRI scanners and reported by a small team of specialist radiologists, using a standardised European reporting method.
Breast clinics
Benson Radiology was the first imaging Practice in South Australia to run dedicated breast and endocrine clinics in conjunction with some of South Australia’s leading breast surgeons.
Each clinic is supported by a radiologist, specialist surgeon, specialist mammographers and sonographers and a registered nurse. These clinics provide a convenient ‘one stop shop’ for patients.

Vacuum assisted biopsy and other interventional procedures
To support breast imaging studies, Benson Radiology provides a range of interventional procedures to take samples of suspicious breast tissue. These can be performed via fine needle aspiration (FNA), core biopsy, vacuum assisted biopsy or stereo tactic biopsy.

Specialised radiologists
Benson Radiology’s breast imaging is underpinned by a team of specialised radiologists who have extensive experience in reporting breast imaging and work closely with our referrers to provide a market leading service.
