Elastography of the liver

Chronic liver disease is a worldwide problem, and traditionally, the only method of staging the degree of fibrosis was via liver biopsy.

However, there have been recent developments in non-invasive methods of liver fibrosis assessment.

Benson Radiology now offers ultrasound shear wave elastography (SWE), an imaging technique to test and map the elastic properties of the liver.

This examination technique is not only useful for the diagnosis and staging of fibrosis, but may also be beneficial for the surveillance of patients with existing fibrosis, the assessment of their treatment and to better understand any potential for reversibility.

These examinations are interpreted by radiologists in our subspecialised body imaging interest group and performed in conjunction with our senior sonographers.
